![]() Surely someone has written a tool to import a bitmap or something, rather than draw every map by hand in the editor?Īny guidance would be greatly appreciated. ![]() ![]() The HACKING guide has a nice breakdown on the data structures behind the map. I've read the manpage and the stuff in /usr/share/doc/freeciv. How did people create the scenarios that come packaged with the game? Did they seriously draw them one tile at a time in the editor? I see the raw text format of the scenario, but I don't want to start tinkering with that by hand if there might be a better tool out there. Looking through the wiki, and searching the community forum hasn't turned up much regarding making a new scenario. I also don't see a way to increase the overall map size. I figured out clicking on Global Observer to see the whole map, but I don't see a way to wipe the slate clean and start with a blank map, nor do I see a way to select a set of tiles and delete them. I'm trying to make a custom map, and I've found out about loading any other map and hitting Ctrl-E to bring up the editor, but that's about as far as I can get. P.S.Apologies in advance if this is a noob question, but I am a noob to Freeciv. Given the cold reception that has been given to Civ V, I would say Freeciv is a very good alternative to the commercial games. Plus, the multiplayer is excellent (although it can be hard to find a game when not playing people you know). Whoever said that it takes all the best bits of Civ II and removes all the annoying bits I think had it spot on. I don't really see why Ctrl+Alt+F1 should elaborate why it is a great game when you gave no reason for how "it sucks". It removes the diplomacy aspect, but gives you a much better chance, plus you have to worry less about trying to keep everyone happy! If you are still struggling, make teams when setting up the game and give your side more nations. ![]() The AI expands very quickly, so if you don't like to build tons of cities, but prefer to develop your cities well, try reducing the size of the map and increasing minimum distance between cities. Map Editor Guide Apologies in advance if this is a noob question, but I am a noob to Freeciv. From this version, a bug with the AI was fixed where if you went to war with them, they would hate you through the whole game and their attitude would never recover (my first patch for an open source project :)) Make sure you play version 2.2.4 or above. So what?" :?: I have played the game many, many times, and I still never increase the difficulty beyond 'easy'! If you need proof, there is a place in the code where the AI's war reason is given as 'none' and the comment reads "We have no legimitate reason. ![]() It will crush you sometimes with no good reason. Unlike the commercial games, the AI is not there to entertain you. Qualitative representations of the terrain created useful heuristics that increased the ability of the AI to play a game of Freeciv. Using knowledge of the terrain and qualitative representations to guide the exploration led to markedly improved game play. I suggest reading through the game manual () and playing the tutorial, which can be selected after clicking 'Start Scenario Game' on the main menu.Īs well as having complex gameplay, the AI is also very unforgiving. The open source game Freeciv was used as a testbed for comparing two exploration algorithms. Freeciv is an excellent game, although it certainly has quite a learning curve if you haven't played the Civilization series (particularly Civ II) before. ![]()
